Silence fell. Zinaida Fyodorovna stood with her mouth open, unable to comprehend. Pavel looked at his wife as if seeing her for the first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You\u2019re giving me an ultimatum?”<\/em> he finally asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019m giving you a choice. Either you stay here, in this apartment, with your mother, and she controls every step of your life\u2014or you come with me, and we build our family. A real family, where no one interferes.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Pasha, don\u2019t listen to her!”<\/em> Zinaida Fyodorovna shouted. “She\u2019s bluffing! Where will she go with the child? She has nothing!”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have a job. I have money saved. I have the strength to start over. And most importantly, I have self-respect\u2014I won\u2019t tolerate humiliation anymore.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ksenia took her bag and headed for the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Where are you going?”<\/em> Pavel stepped toward her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“To my apartment. I\u2019ll bring the rest of my things tomorrow when Zinaida Fyodorovna isn\u2019t around. I don\u2019t want unnecessary scenes.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Wait!”<\/em> He grabbed her hand. “Ksyush, wait. Let\u2019s talk.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“About what, Pasha? About how your mother will tell you which crib to buy? How she\u2019ll decide which kindergarten? How she\u2019ll come every day to check if I feed the baby right?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She gently freed her hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019m tired of fighting for my place in this family. Tired of proving I deserve respect. If you love me and our child, you know where to find us.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You\u2019ll regret this!”<\/em> Zinaida Fyodorovna yelled after her. “You\u2019ll crawl back on your knees!”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ksenia stopped at the door and turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I\u2019ve endured a lot from you, Zinaida Fyodorovna. But today, you crossed the line. You threatened to take my child. A mother\u2019s instinct is powerful. It makes you protect your child at any cost\u2014even at the cost of breaking with your husband.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked at Pavel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You have until tomorrow. Decide what matters more\u2014your mother\u2019s approval or your family.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
