The standoff over Greenland is heating up.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the U.S. president is back with a new warning.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite a poll last year showing 85% of Greenlanders don\u2019t want to become part of the U.S., the president appears set on taking control of the Arctic territory \u2014 and he just delivered a chilling new warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a Truth Social<\/a> post on Monday morning, the president slammed Denmark for allegedly failing to neutralize what he calls the \u201cRussian threat\u201d on the Arctic island, declaring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dUnfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump<\/a> claimed NATO has been urging Denmark for 20 years to \u201cget the Russian threat away from Greenland,\u201d and he signaled that he may take matters into his own hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The post comes just a day after Trump announced a 10% tariff on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland, targeting nations he says are standing in the way of U.S. control of Greenland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting on Feb. 1, Trump warned that the tariffs will remain in place \u201cuntil Greenland becomes American.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move has sparked immediate backlash across Europe. Emergency talks among EU ambassadors were held Sunday, and EU Council President Antonio Costa issued a strong statement: \u201cTariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and are incompatible with the EU-U.S. trade agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Costa added that the EU is \u201cready to defend ourselves against any form of coercion,\u201d and a special summit of EU leaders is set for Thursday to address the Greenland<\/a> crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, and Finland issued a joint statement stressing that troops sent to Greenland for Operation Arctic Endurance<\/em> \u201cpose no threat to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danish Foreign Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen warned that dialogue is ongoing but insisted, \u201cwe will not give up on that\u2026 So we will stay on track \u2014 unless U.S. decides differently.\u201d Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201dWe will not allow ourselves to be put under pressure, and those types of threats (of U.S. tariffs) are unacceptable between close allies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to some experts, the controversy marks one of the sharpest rebukes from Europe since Trump returned to the White House nearly a year ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republican Rep. Michael McCaul blasted the idea of a U.S. military takeover of Greenland on Sunday, warning that any such action would put America in direct conflict with its NATO allies \u2014 and could even spell the end of the alliance itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During an appearance on This Week<\/em>, McCaul \u2014 the former chair of both the House Foreign Affairs and Homeland Security committees \u2014 pushed back on President Trump\u2019s rhetoric and threats tied to the Arctic island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe fact is, the president has full military access to Greenland to protect us from any threat,\u201d McCaul said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo if he wants to purchase Greenland, that\u2019s one thing. But for him to militarily invade would turn Article 5 of NATO on its very head and, in essence, press a war with NATO itself. It would end up abolishing NATO as we know it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
