I had spent every one of them sharing him with that hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was a gifted surgeon, and I was proud that my husband saved so many lives. But over the past year, I had started wrapping up his dinner before I even sat down to eat mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He missed Thanksgiving, our anniversary, and our daughter\u2019s eighth birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes he didn\u2019t come home at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;&#8221;We\u2019re short-staffed, honey. Please don\u2019t wait up.&#8221;&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever he finally crawled into bed, he looked so exhausted that I swallowed every complaint. Once, I woke to find him sitting on the edge of the mattress, his shoulders shaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;&#8221;Ben?&#8221;&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wiped his face before turning around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;&#8221;Rough night. Go back to sleep.&#8221;&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So that Tuesday, after watching him leave with his hospital badge clipped to his pocket, I decided to surprise him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I packed his favorite lunch, added a slice of apple pie, and tucked a note under the fork:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;&#8221;You don\u2019t have to take care of everyone. Let me have a turn.&#8221;&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I drove to the hospital, imagining how happy Ben would be to see me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the moment I arrived, something felt wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the nurses\u2019 station, a woman I had known for years stopped smiling the moment she saw me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;&#8221;Is Ben around?&#8221;&#8221; I asked. &#8220;&#8221;And please don\u2019t warn him. He\u2019ll tell me I shouldn\u2019t have bothered.&#8221;&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She glanced at the nurse beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My smile faded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;&#8221;Did something happen to him?
