This puzzle looks easy… until you try to solve it.
A bowl filled with oranges is sitting in front of you, and the question is simple:
How many oranges are in the bowl?
Most people answer instantly. Some count 10, others 11, and some are convinced there are 12 or more.
So who’s right?
Look again—slowly.
Count only the oranges that are actually visible. You’ll notice that several are fully visible, while others are partially hidden behind the oranges in front of them.
If you count every orange that is at least partially visible, the total is 11 visible oranges.
But here’s the twist.
The oranges are stacked inside the bowl, and some may be completely hidden from view. Because this is a single 2D image, we cannot see the entire bowl or everything behind the front layer of fruit.
So if the question is “How many oranges can you see?”, the answer is 11.
If the question is “How many oranges are actually in the bowl?”, the only honest answer is: we can’t know for sure.
That’s what makes this puzzle interesting. It isn’t just about counting—it’s about observation, assumptions, and critical thinking.
