Sad news: A well-known TV presenter passed away overnight.

My nine-year-old son’s barber leaned close after finishing his haircut and quietly said, “When you get home, look behind his left ear.”

Twenty minutes later, two police cruisers were parked outside my house.

Ethan had been getting his hair cut at the same neighborhood barbershop for nearly two years. Our usual barber knew him by name, so when he was already busy one Saturday morning and another barber offered to take Ethan instead, I didn’t think twice.

The man introduced himself as Marcus.

He seemed pleasant and easygoing.

Ethan climbed into the chair, Marcus wrapped the cape around his shoulders, and everything started normally.

As usual, Ethan talked the entire time.

School.

Soccer practice.

His favorite video games.

Nothing felt unusual.

Then Marcus stepped behind him and began trimming around his left ear.

The clippers suddenly went silent.

So did Ethan.

I glanced up from my phone.

Marcus had brushed a small section of hair away from the back of Ethan’s ear.

And he was staring.

Not casually.

Not for a second.

He studied the area for several long moments.

Something was clearly wrong.

Then his eyes met mine in the mirror.

The friendly expression he’d been wearing had disappeared.

“What is it?” I asked.

Marcus barely shook his head.

He said nothing.

Instead, he turned the clippers back on and quietly finished the haircut.

When he finally removed the cape, Ethan hopped out of the chair and wandered toward the candy machine near the front window.

I opened my purse to pay.

That was when Marcus leaned toward me.

“Check behind his ear.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

Another customer was already waiting nearby.

Marcus lowered his voice even more.

“His left ear. Look carefully when you get home.”

A knot formed in my stomach.

“What did you see?”

Marcus glanced around before shaking his head.

“Not here.”

Ten minutes later, Ethan and I were back home.

I placed my keys on the kitchen counter.

“Come here for a minute.”

Ethan immediately looked nervous.

“Why? Did he mess up my haircut?”

“No. Just turn around.”

I gently moved the freshly cut hair away from his left ear.

At first, everything looked normal.

There was only some mild redness from the clippers.

Then I noticed it.

Hidden inside the crease where his ear connected to his head was a tiny patch almost identical to the color of his skin.

It was so well concealed that I might never have noticed it without Marcus’s warning.

I touched it carefully.

Something solid was underneath.

My stomach dropped.

Very slowly, I lifted one edge of the patch.

Beneath it was a tiny black object.

Round.

Smooth.

Hard.

Barely larger than a grain of rice.

Someone had deliberately attached it behind my son’s ear.

“Ethan.”

I struggled to keep my voice calm.

“Who put this here?”

His face changed instantly.

“I don’t know.”

“Ethan, look at me.”

His eyes dropped toward the floor.

“Who put this behind your ear?”

He stayed silent for several seconds.

Then he whispered,

“Maybe the man from school.”

I froze.

“What man?”

Ethan swallowed hard.

“The man who told me he knew Dad.”

My entire body went cold.

Ethan’s father had been dead for three years.

I grabbed my phone and called the police.

The dispatcher listened as I explained what Marcus had discovered and what I had found behind Ethan’s ear.

Then her voice became firm.

“Do not remove the object. Do not touch it again.”

My heart started pounding.

“Okay.”

“Are you and your son inside your house right now?”

“Yes.”

“Lock every door and remain inside. Officers are on their way.”

Twenty minutes later, two police cruisers pulled up in front of my home.

Several officers came inside.

One carefully examined the black object behind Ethan’s ear without touching it.

His expression immediately grew serious.

Then he turned toward me.

“Has anyone you don’t recognize been inside your home recently?”

“No.”

“Any repair workers? Maintenance people? Delivery workers?”

“No. Just family.”

The officer exchanged a quick look with his partner.
