On a sweltering summer afternoon, Alberto Sáenz, heir to a wealthy Andalusian family, stopped at a secluded overlook above the roaring sea. In the backseat of the car sat his mother, Elena, paralyzed for two years, and beside her, Bruno—the family’s loyal dog of over a decade.
