Here’s a little puzzle that looks much easier than it really is.

At first glance, the answer may seem obvious. But once you start counting the eggs, things get a little confusing.

Your challenge is simple: move just one egg so there are 5 eggs on each side.

You cannot move more than one egg, and you cannot add or remove any eggs.

Take a close look at the arrangement and think carefully about where that one egg could go.

You might try moving an egg from the horizontal row or the vertical row, but those moves won’t give you five eggs on both sides.

The trick is to stop thinking of the eggs as belonging to only one row.

Look closely at the egg where the two rows meet. That egg is the key.

Now look at the egg sitting by itself at the top. Move that egg down to the intersection and place it directly on top of the egg that is already there.

That’s it!

Now there are two eggs stacked at the intersection.

The horizontal row can be counted as 5 eggs, while the vertical row can also be counted as 5 eggs because the two eggs at the intersection belong to both rows.

The important trick is that the intersection is shared by both rows. You are not adding or removing any eggs—you are simply rearranging one egg and changing the way the rows are counted.

The Solution

Move the top egg down to the intersection and place it directly on top of the existing egg.
